Butterflies of Mumbai (Maharashtra, India)

Every Butterfly (ചിത്രശലഭം) is an art work par-excellence. They are among the most exquisitely crafted creations of nature synonymous with delicate beauty.

The Mumbai city is unique in its own way and has its vast greeneries around and even well within its boundaries. The Godrej Mangroves on its eastern suburbs is one such example. According to the study by Dr. Arun in 2007-2008 there are 76 species of butterflies present in this area alone, which is even comparable to good natural forest areas.

This astonishing divesity of butterflies amidst the urban wilderness of Mumbai raises serious concerns about the issue of urban biodiversity and its documentation, which has traditionally received far too less attention compared to habitats in non-urban areas.

The slideshow and images mostly depicts the butterflies from Vikhroli area

They are aptly referred to as

The 'Flowers of the Animal World' or 'The Flying Flowers'
